The gift 🎁 of body 🌎

Dear friends,

I have a gift for you:

While you read this, place your hands somewhere on your body. Maybe press your palms together, or give yourself a light hug, or place your hands on your thighs.

Take a breath in and a breath out. Connect with the sensations in your hands. With each breath, feel from your hands the sensation of your body, and feel from your body, the sensation of your hands. Take another breath.

Go. Do that now. I'll wait. (Eyes closed heightens the experience if that is available to you.)

Isn't your breath a gift?! Isn't your body a gift!?!

It is still a profound idea to me that this BODY is vehicle through which I experience all of life: the emotions, the sensations, the pain, the pleasure, even the THOUGHTS are all available to me because I was born into a physical body. And this body influences my life path as much as my actions. My body is part of my karma.

To be clear, as yoga says, I am not my body. I have a body. Not an object to be owned, controlled and extracted from, but a piece of the whole system. A system that includes bones, organs, electrical current, chemicals... matter, energy and spirit.

I like to think of the nervous system as a bridge. It's the transformer that converts energy into physical matter. The mind directs the current.

So do our emotions control our mind? Or does our mind control our emotions? (Trick question. It works in both directions)

In MotherCircle, class three is called MotherBody. We start with a practice similar to what you just did. Then I teach about the 5 universal postpartum needs. There is time for sharing in context of the teaching. And we return again to the somatic practice.

In the 5 universal postpartum needs there is the acknowledgement that repair (coming back home to ourselves after birth) happens on the levels of matter, energy and spirit. And while the foundation of health is extended rest and nourishing food, repair is not complete until the energy body is sealed, we honor our individual experience and place it in context of the community. All of this happens with elders, sisters, aunties and friends. In other words: together.

In my last email, I said that MotherCircle is about the female nervous system in the context of motherhood. What you experienced is an embodied example of that. I hope that it was helpful. Insightful. Clarifying. Releasing.

This Sunday, I'm offering a free class called Skills & Practices for the New Era of Motherhood. You can get an even bigger drink of MotherCircle at this free class. You are welcome whether or not you plan to attend the full course. And bring a friend!

Feminine Mysteries Oracle Dear friends, I was listening to some reporting on the radio about Linsday Clancey and how this is bringing forward the conversation about maternal mental health. My friend Rachel used the word revenant which is generally defined as someone who returns (to life). That she "returned" to expose an invisible but systemic flaw so that we might root out the problem. In the radio piece the expert said that this highlights the fact that there is nothing specific in the DSM...

Feminine Mysteries Oracle Dear friends, [from Dawn] I’ve started writing emails to you a few times in the last couple of weeks and every time I get stuck because there’s something that needs to be said at the outset, but it feels like a hard thing to say because I could easily be misunderstood. I ask you to hear this with an open mind because I am saying it with an open heart. I’ve listened to a lot of people that I respect on this topic and I’ve tuned in to my inner sense of truth. I’m...

Feminine Mysteries Oracle Dear friends, Today, we will introduce you to Veronica: I’m Veronica, though some know me as Nomadic Oracle, Veronica Monique. I first picked up a tarot deck when I was seventeen out of pure curiosity. What I didn’t realize at the time was that tarot would become one of the tools that helped me better understand myself and the world around me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been deeply sensitive to the emotions and energies of others. Tarot helped me develop...
